Research

My main interest is the immunology of sterile inflammation

Initially I worked on the interactions between infections and auto immune type 1 diabetes (the so called hygiene hypothesis) where I demonstrated how Salmonella typhimurium infection protects against diabetes development in the NOD mouse. I also helped to characterise the first NOD es cells to be successfully generated which could produce viable fertile mice, developing new tools for studying this disease.

Now I have since moved into the field of cardiovascular medicine. Here I am interested in how a very rare immune cell (type II innate lymphoid cells) can influence the progression and development of atherosclerosis as well as during wound healing after myocardial infarction
