Human Foxp3+ T cells are phenotypically and functionally heterogeneous. Identification and functional assessment of regulatory T cells (Treg) has been controversial due to the lack of specific markers for functional Treg, and partial understanding of their development and functional capabilities. It was recently demonstrated that CD39 expression, an ectonucleotidase, correlated with regulatory function. We examine whether CD39 could be used to discriminate between different functional Treg subsets.
