I am interested in how type-2 immune responses are initiated in allergen-induced asthma. My lab has recently identified a novel innate cell type (nuocyte) that arises in IL-25 and IL-33 dependent immune responses, such as in helminth infection and asthma, and which secretes IL-13. My work focuses upstream of this process where I am trying to understand how the signalling pathway occurs from allergen exposure to initiation of lung inflammation. I have identified a receptor of the toll-like family in the surface of epithelial cells that is required for allergen binding and that this mechanism initiates IL-25 and IL-33 production by these cells, which then initiate the inflammatory cascade in the lungs.

Along with the asthma project, I have also used a model of type-2 colitis in mice where I found that blocking IL-25 signalling through neutralizing antibodies against IL-25 & IL-17BR improves clinical symptoms and gut inflammation, by limiting IL-13 production from NKT cells and nuocytes.

I currently work for MedImmune. Medimmune
